Introducing The Family Mentors Project
February 25, 2026Better Queensway February Update
Our community partners at Southend City Council have shared the following Better Quensway update.
February saw strong progress on site, steady movement on design and traffic planning, and positive engagement with both residents and partners.
Below is a quick overview of the key highlights from February’s activity.
- Roundabout bridges removed
The old roundabout bridges and the pedestrian footbridge have now been taken down. All the demolished material has been cleared from the site. - Drainage work being planned
Since the demolition of bridges and clearing of the site, we are preparing the area for future installation of the new drainage and flood management system. - Sutton Road improvements
Work has started to widen Sutton Road. A new mini‑roundabout and three pedestrian crossings will also be built on Southchurch Road. - Positive resident event
At the resident event on 4 February, people shared helpful ideas and were pleased to see work underway. There was strong support for filling in the underpass and adding more pedestrian crossings. Residents also asked about parking and future green spaces, and many were interested in another event to discuss future housing plans - Communications and media coverage
Cllr Cowan’s visit to the site with the Southend Tourism Partnership was shared in the Council’s weekly newsletter. The Echo also published a positive article about the bridge removals and included links to our video.
