March 4, 2026Introducing The Family Mentors Project
We are delighted to introduce The Family Mentor Project. Based in Southend this is a vital community initiative designed to support local families navigating the complexities of modern parenting and social challenges. Managed by Volunteering Matters in partnership with Southend-on-Sea City Council, the project recruits and trains local volunteers to act as a bridge for families who may be facing isolation, low self-esteem, or the risk of social care involvement.
Rather than providing a clinical or rigid service, these mentors offer a “friendly face” and a consistent listening ear. Volunteers typically visit a family for one to two hours a week, assisting with practical skills like budgeting and routine-building, while also empowering parents to advocate for their children’s needs. By de-escalating issues early, the project plays a crucial role in keeping families together and reducing the strain on statutory services.
How to Volunteer
The project seeks empathetic individuals aged 18+ from the local area. No professional background in social care is required, as the project provides full, high-quality training and ongoing supervision. Volunteers are asked to commit to a weekly visit for approximately six to nine months, building a relationship based on mutual trust.
